Eyelid Surgery — Fort Worth, TX

We perform blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift or eyelid surgery, at Fort Worth Plastic Surgery to remove under-eye puffiness, lift drooping lids, and soften wrinkles in a way that looks natural, not “worked on.” This results in a more attractive appearance that reflects how you feel – happy, youthful, and confident.

At your consultation, double board-certified plastic and head and neck surgeon Dr. Robert G. Anderson or board-certified general surgeon Dr. Dustin Derrick will discuss the precautions we take during eyelid surgery to obtain the natural effect you desire.

Types of Eyelid Surgery

An eyelid lift can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Upper eyelid surgery is used to address sagging skin that can be a cosmetic concern and sometimes block the field of vision. Lower eyelid surgery is focused on eliminating “bags,” wrinkles, sagging, or dark circles beneath the eye.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Good eyelid rejuvenation surgery candidates are generally in good health and seek to improve the look and/or function of their eyelids. Ideal candidates have realistic expectations about the results and understand the procedure’s benefits and limitations. Both men and women experiencing these concerns, whether due to aging, genetics, or lifestyle factors, may benefit from this procedure to achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.

What Happens During Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure in our AAAASF-accredited surgical facility. It generally takes up to two hours for both the upper and lower eyelids to be treated.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

During upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made within the natural fold of the lid and extended outward. The incision will go out as wide as possible so that additional skin folds on the outside of the upper eye can also be addressed.

Next, the excess skin, tissue, and, in some cases, a small portion of muscle are removed. The incision is closed with absorbable sutures, and the scar remains almost completely hidden because it is located in the natural crease.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

During lower eyelid surgery, an incision is made along the bottom of the lash line. This allows your surgeon to remove excess fat and tissue.

In patients who have puffy lower eyelids but good skin tone, an approach known as a transconjunctival blepharoplasty can be performed instead. This technique puts the incision inside the lower eyelid rather than on the lash line.

Patients who have dark circles under their eyes may have a fat deficiency in these areas. Injectables can help fill these soft-tissue deficiencies and improve the appearance of these circles.

After Your Procedure

The area around the eyes will be bruised and swollen for about a week after surgery. During recovery, patients should apply ice packs, keep their heads elevated, and apply medicated eye ointment. You will be scheduled for a follow-up appointment with your surgeon one or two weeks later.

Patients comment that friends and family tell them they look great but often cannot pinpoint what is different. These subtle yet dramatic results restore a softer, more youthful appearance.

Eyelid Lift FAQs

Is eyelid surgery permanent?

The results of eyelid surgery typically last 10 to 15 years, depending on factors like skin elasticity, aging, and lifestyle habits. While upper eyelid surgery results may last a long time, lower eyelid improvements are generally more permanent, with often only minimal changes necessary.

How old do I have to be for blepharoplasty?

Eyelid lifts are usually performed on individuals in their late 30s or older, but younger patients with hereditary concerns like under-eye bags or drooping lids may also benefit. Your surgeon will evaluate your specific needs to determine if the procedure is right for you.
